Bromley vs Woking
Vanarama National League
Monday 1st April 2024
15:00 Kick-Off

Woking will look to bounce back quickly as they travel to Bromley on Easter Monday.

Defeat against Eastleigh on Good Friday was a disappointing end to the Cards’ six game unbeaten run at home, and a trip to third placed Bromley will be extremely difficult with Gateshead breathing down the Ravens’ necks for that bye through to the playoff semi finals.

Michael Doyle will have a new signing to add to the squad, whilst he will be hoping that Timi Odusina’s tight hamstring, which forced him off after half an hour on Friday, will be fine for the trip to Hayes Lane.

Opposition Watch
After a rocky start which saw them pick up just three points from their first five games, Bromley never looked back following their first win, keeping them in the top three for most of the season. However, one win across January and February seemingly opened the race for the top three up to others, although it is still well within the Ravens’ hands.

Key to Andy Woodman’s success, as always, has been the goals of Michael Cheek. Serial goalscorer Cheek has 20 in 40 games, and his metronomic scoring rate has been impressive in the fifth tier; since 2015/16 he’s scored at least 13 goals each season in the National League in nine consecutive seasons.

Defensively, Bromley are only behind Southend United in terms of goals conceded (44) and whilst they’ve scored the least number of goals out of anyone in the top seven, they’ve kept six clean sheets in their last seven games in all competitions. The exception was a 2-0 home defeat to York City, and they’ve won just two of their last seven home league games.

Last Time Out
Deja vu as Deji Elerewe’s second half header gave Bromley a 1-0 win at the Laithwaite back in October. Of course, it was his goal to complete the turnaround from 1-0 down in the playoff eliminator last season after Rohan Ince gave Woking the lead.

In 23 meetings between the sides, Woking have won nine, Bromley have won eleven and there have been three draws.

Michael Doyle made three changes to the side beaten by Eastleigh on Good Friday, with Alan Judge and Timi Odusina absent from the squad, being replaced by Dion Kelly-Evans and Finn Delap. Ricky Korboa made his first start since returning from injury, replacing Alfie Pavey, who dropped to the bench, whilst new loan signing Sonny Singh made the bench.

Woking looked lively early on, but a dangerous Bromley free kick on seven minutes saw Michael Cheek given a free header. He couldn’t direct the effort either side of Jaaskelainen.

After a foul on the edge of the box by Luke Wilkinson on Corey Whitely, the Woking defender was booked. The following free kick from Ashley Charles went just over the bar.

Woking made the breakthrough on the stroke of half time when a superb ball from Kevin Berkoe was met by Dan Moss, who squeezed the cross in and left Ricky Korboa with a tap in.

Half-time: Bromley 0-1 Woking

The second half continued in the same cagey fashion as the first half, with chances limited to shots from distance and a lack of quality in the final third.

A half chance for Will Davies on 76 minutes saw him fire high over the bar on the half volley as Andy Woodman looked to shuffle his team.

Woking had a couple of good chances on the break, as Kendall was well denied by Lewis Thomas with ten minutes left, before a huge chance for the hosts.

Michael Cheek was denied twice by Will Jaaskelainen in the space of a couple of minutes, first with his body and then at his near post.

But Bromley found the finishing touch in stoppage time, when a long throw was hammered into the bottom corner by Kido Taylor-Hart.

A point not a bad result for Woking, but they were oh so close to a big win at Hayes Lane.
