Chipstead v Woking
Surrey Senior Cup 3rd Round
7.45pm on Tuesday 14 January 2014

The Cards take on the Chips this (Tuesday) evening in the next round of the Surrey Senior Cup. Garry will no doubt give a run-out to those first team squad players who did not figure much against Braintree Town at the weekend plus some youth team players.

WOKING

The Cards should be in good spirits following their fine 1-0 win over Braintree, although Garry will presumably still be working hard to bring in players following the expiry of the loans of Jack Marriott, Scott Rendell and Charles Banya and the opening of the transfer window.

In previous rounds of the Surrey Senior Cup Woking beat Linfield 5-2 at home and then Walton Casuals 3-2 with goals from Reece Beckles, Gavin Williams and Gez Sole.

Last season Woking were knocked out on penalties by Godalming Town at the Quarter-Final stage of this competition.

CHIPSTEAD

The Chips currently lie in 22nd place in the Ryman League Division One South, with 22 points from 25 games. They have won six games, drawn four and lost 15, scoring 42 goals and conceding 62. Manager Steve Baker, previously with Walton and Hersham, took over the reins from Kevin Rayner in early November and had some initial success, pulling them out of the bottom three, but the Chips have not won in their last five league games. On Saturday, however, they came back from 2-0 down at Tooting and Mitcham United to snatch a draw,

Midfielder (!) Dan Moody is clearly the ‘danger man’, with 20 goals already to his name this season, following two seasons as prolific top scorer for Guildford City.

In the Surrey Senior Cup the Chips beat Mole Valley 5-2 away in the first round and then defeated Epsom and Ewell 3-0 at home in the last round.

GETTING THERE

Tel: 01737 553250

By car

Head for the M25 eastbound and exit at J7, M23 Northbound, signposted Croydon, which becomes the A23 after two miles. After about another mile turn left at traffic lights, by a BP garage, into Star Lane. Follow Star Lane as it becomes Elmore Road, keeping the church and green on your left. At the crossroads with High Road turn left (signposted Lower Kingswood and Reigate): parking for away supporters is 200 yards on the left. The clubhouse and turnstiles are a further 200 yards along the same road.

By train

The Chipstead website advises travelling to Coulsdon South and taking a taxi from the station, which is about three miles to the ground. Chipstead station is nearer (just over a mile) but you have to go up a very steep and narrow hill with no pavements. (Unlike at Coulsdon South, there is no cab office.) Sounds dangerous on a dark evening!

The quickest way of getting to Coulsdon South is to take a train to Clapham Junction and change there. The 18.26 from Clapham would get you to Coulsdon South at 18.47, whilst the 18.57 arrives at 19.14. There are trains back at 22.15 and 22.47.

NEXT UP

The Cards’ forthcoming games are:

Surrey Senior Cup 3rd Round
14th January 2014

Despite the recent bad weather, the pitch was in surprisingly good condition for this Surrey Senior Cup match as Woking took on Chipstead, who are currently languishing in 22nd place in the Ryman League Division One South. Given the recent lack of activity for the first team squad, Woking fielded a strong side but the apparent gulf in class was not in evidence initially as a spirited home team took the game to their opponents and deservedly went ahead after thirteen minutes when a mix-up between Sam Beasant in the Woking goal and George Frith, playing in the unfamiliar position of left back, allowed a Chipstead attacker to roll the ball into an empty net.

Woking quickly got down to business after this early reversal and were back on level terms when Giuseppe Sole's shot was spilled by Marshall in the home goal and John Goddard was on hand to tap home. The Cards then took the lead before the interval when Reece Beckles slotted in a loose ball when the home defence failed to clear a cross.

Half-time: Chipstead 1 Woking 2

The second period was played in steady rain throughout as Woking's superior skill and fitness started to tell. Five minutes into the half, Sole finished a sharp passing move to beat the offside trap and coolly slot home before a Kevin Betsy header increased the lead just after the hour mark.

It was now all Woking as Betsy (pictured) added a fifth in the seventy-first minute following a swift move down the right flank before completing a fine hat-trick seven minutes later. To their credit, the home team did not throw in the towel and notched a second shortly after to complete the scoring for the evening.

A straightforward win for Woking, therefore, as was to be expected given the strong side they fielded. It was a useful run-out for a number of the first team squad, however, in readiness for the Skrill Premier fixture at Welling on Saturday. The Kent side will no doubt be doubly determined to perform well given their embarrassment at having become, at home on Tuesday evening, the first team this season to lose to bottom-of-the-table Hyde.

Woking: Sam Beasant, Adam Newton, George Frith, Niall Wright, Adam Brice, Brett Johnson, Anthony McNamee, John Goddard (John Nutter 69), Reece Beckles, Giuseppe Sole (Josh Payne 69), Kevin Betsy

Unused subs: Liam Allen, Joe McNerney

Caution: John Goddard 54

Woking will be at home to Leatherhead in the quarter-finals of the Surrey Senior Cup.
