Westfield vs Woking
Monday 9th August 2021
Woking make the short trip to neighbours Westfield on Monday evening as Alan Dowson’s side play their seventh and final pre-season game.
It’s been a positive warm-up campaign for the Cards, with memorable home wins over Chelsea U23s and AFC Wimbledon, as well as hosting a near full strength West Bromwich Albion side back in mid-July. Dowse has used the last two games against lower league opposition, Farnborough and former club Hampton & Richmond Borough, to experiment with his side. On Saturday, both remaining trialists played closed to the full 90 minutes, whilst there was more game time for the likes of Mark Smith and Tommy Block, as well as new signing Tahvon Campbell.
The boss could use Monday’s game to give more of a run out to those players who didn’t feature on Saturday which, barring any injuries, would include Kyran Lofthouse, Solomon Nwabuokei, Kane Thompson-Sommers, Tyreke Johnson and Jamar Loza. Dowse will also be hoping for good news on versatile defender Tom Champion, who was forced off after just six minutes at the Beveree.
Westfield will be keenly anticipating a second full season in the Isthmian South Central Division, the eighth tier of English football, to which they were promoted in 2018 after winning the Combined Counties Football League. In 2019 they finished in a hugely respectable fifth place, losing their play-off semi-final to Bracknell Town. The following year they sat fifth again when the season was curtailed with ten games to go, whilst last season they were 11th after just seven completed fixtures.
They are managed by Simon Lane, who had previously managed at Egham Town, Northwood, Windsor and Eton and Wingate and Finchley, and who took over in May 2020. They’ve won two, drawn three, lost two of their pre-season games so far. This is their last warm-up match before they start their league season at home to Tooting & Mitcham United on Saturday.
Tickets can only be bought on the night. The cost is £7 for adults, £4 for concessions and free for under-10s. Cash and card are accepted – although cash is preferred.
Gates will be open from 6:15pm - bar and tea hut will be open and unlike last year with the COVID-19 restrictions you can once again watch the game from the balcony.
