Bury v Woking
Emirates FA Cup 1st Round Replay
7.45pm on Tuesday 14 November 2017

The Shakers and the Cards resume battle on Tuesday evening in a bid to see who will host the winner of the replay the following evening between Tranmere Rovers and Peterborough United. It’s difficult to believe that Bury won’t put up a better show than in the original tie, so Anthony Limbrick’s side will have to be at their best to get through. They will have taken confidence, however, from their previous display against the League 1 team and in keeping a clean sheet in their 0-0 draw at FC Halifax Town on Saturday.

WOKING

The Cards ended a run of three consecutive league defeats with a hard-fought, rather dour, 0-0 draw at the Shay Stadium. With Kane Ferdinand available after his return from a three-match suspension, Anthony rested Chez Isaac and Joe Ward, bringing both on as substitutes in the second half. Isaac had made a very quick recovery from injury to play against Bury last Sunday, while Ward had played 45 minutes for the England C team in Slovakia midweek. The promising Declan Appau started in midfield alongside Ferdinand and Joey Jones. Fabio Saraiva was once again an unused substitute but Jason Banton wasn’t in the 16.

While a clean sheet was very welcome after recent defensive lapses, Anthony will be hoping that his side can carve out a few more chances on Tuesday evening.

The draw left the Cards in 8th place in the table.

BURY

The Shakers will go into this game with renewed confidence on the back of a 3-0 win over a Stoke City U21 side in the Checkatrade Trophy on Wednesday night and a well-deserved 1-1 draw at Gillingham on Saturday. Bury were the better side in the first half against the Gills and ought perhaps to have had more than a Neil Danns goal to show for their efforts at the interval. But the Gills gradually got on top in the second half and equalised late on, though substitute Andrew Tutte hit the post for the Shakers. While Shakers’ temporary manager Ryan Lowe will have been pleased with his side’s display, it nevertheless left the club sitting at the bottom of League 1 thanks to Plymouth Argyle’s surprise win at Bradford City.

Top scorer Jermaine Beckford was still missing on Saturday. There were three changes in the starting line-up from the side at the Laithwaite Community Stadium. Irish, ex-Celtic, defender Eoghan O’Connell returned, having been suspended for the game at Woking, and the highly-experienced midfielder Neil Danns (ex-Birmingham City, Crystal Palace and Leicester City) and striker Nicky Ajose (who had come on as a substitute at Woking) were also in the starting eleven. Dropping to the bench were Andrew Tutte, Chris Humphrey and Chris Maguire. They were joined there by two ‘new faces’: Chris Sang, a forward signed from Wigan in the summer and who had been on loan at Southport, and Scott Maloney, a young keeper.

Players likely to figure on Tuesday are 23-year-old Italian keeper, Leonardo Fasan, who signed from Celtic in the summer, having had a brief loan spell at Port Vale; and defenders Chris Humphrey, a Jamaican international, with over 400 appearances on his CV, including for Motherwell in the Champions League qualifiers and Preston North End; Phil Edwards, with over 500 appearances, including six successful seasons with Accrington Stanley and two promotions with Burton Albion; Tom Aldred, who also had a good spell with Accrington before making 75 appearances for Blackpool; Greg Leigh, a 21 year-old formerly with Manchester City’s Academy, Crewe and Bradford City; Jordan Williams, on loan from Huddersfield Town; and Callum Reilly, who made 60 appearances for Birmingham City and was part of the Burton Albion side which won promotion to the Championship.

In midfield, in addition to Neil Danns, we are likely to see Jay O’Shea, signed in the summer from Chesterfield in spite of an offer from Sheffield United; Rohan Ince, brought in on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion to replace the injured Stephen Dawson; and Andrew Tutte, formerly with Manchester City’s Academy and Rochdale.

Up front, in addition to ex-Manchester United youngster, Ajose, on loan from Charlton Athletic, we are likely to see again the scorer of Bury’s goal at the Laithwaite, Michael Smith, a 6’4” striker, who joined in the summer, having played for a number of League clubs, with his longest spell at Swindon Town. Chris Maguire will no doubt also be on the team sheet. He arrived in the summer from Oxford, having played over 150 games for Aberdeen and won two full Scottish caps before a £400k move to Derby.

By train

There is no train station in Bury itself. You’d need to take a train to Manchester Piccadilly or Manchester Victoria and then take the Metrolink tram (see below).

The advice on Bury’s website is:

There are no train stations in Bury. The nearest main line station is Manchester Piccadilly or Manchester Victoria. The Metrolink tram system operates from both and is a direct service to Bury. Once you exit the Metrolink Station in Bury, the ground is a 10 to 15 minute walk. We strongly advise all travelling supporters using the Metrolink to check on their website for any engineering works - http://www.metrolink.co.uk

The 135 Bus Service also departs from the same station and drops on Manchester Road at the bottom of Gigg Lane (Every 15 minutes service).
Taxis are also on hand outside the Interchange tram/Bus Station.
To walk to Gigg Lane from Metrolink. Come out of the tram exit, up the stairs and turn right. Cross the dual carriageway (Angouleme Way) and head down Market Street (Bury College is on both sides of the road). At the bottom of the road, continue over the mini roundabout and continue down Market Street until you come to Bury Cemetery Gates – this is Gigg Lane, the Stadium can be found by turning right and walking for approx. 500 yards.

LAST TIME OUT

Woking 1 Bury 1
Emirates FA Cup 1st Round
5 November 2017

The Cards recovered from a disastrous start – conceding a goal in 42 seconds after a calamitous defensive error from Joey Jones – to deservedly equalise through a fine Jamie Philpot header after 25 minutes and then to take the game to the League 1 side for the greater part of the remainder of the match.

Josh Staunton, Charlie Carter and Bobson Bawling were all missing through injury, and Kane Ferdinand was serving the last game of his three-match suspension, but Chez Isaac was a welcome name on the team sheet in spite of incurring what looked like a fairly serious injury in the game against Guiseley a week before. Bury were missing top scorer Jermaine Beckford.

Bury started on the front foot and Cards fans feared the worst after seeing their side concede so quickly. But the Shakers failed to press home their advantage and the Cards began to get a grip of the game in midfield and to look threatening, especially through Joe Ward, while Inih Effiong put himself about in typical fashion. Regan Charles-Cook’s excellent cross set up Jamie Philpot for the equaliser.

The Cards had a number of half chances to win the game in the second half, most notably when Effiong put a header just wide, and the impressive Declan Appau’s strike was blocked by a mix of arm and body, but Bury too came to life later on in the half, getting in some shots from the edge of the area.
