Woking Reserves 3 Bedfont Green Reserves 2
Suburban Football League Challenge Cup
5 September 2009
This was a maturing performance for the reserves against a much older and more physical Bedfont Green side.
Woking were to take the lead on 24 minutes as Jerson Dos Santos won and then converted a penalty, a lead Woking held until half-time. The second period was only two minutes old when Matty Powell crossed a ball from the right which deflected into the path of Matt Ellis, who curled a great shot into the roof of the Bedfont net. With Woking 2-0 up, the game seemed secure. However, the redoubling of effort from a determined Bedfont side and some slack marking in the Woking box led to a free header and, with the ball in the net, 30 minutes remaining and the game at 2-1, all bets were off.
Thereafter nerves were jangling until some clever play from Jerson Dos Santos resulted in his delivering a neat pass across the box for the marauding Ollie Palmer to fire the ball home from six yards to put Woking 3-1 up and 25 minutes to play. Bedfont crafted themselves another consolation goal after again some less than resolute defending but with the final whistle Woking were to run out worthy winners.
Woking will be away to either Whyteleafe or Welling in Round 2.
