Match Preview | Cards hoping home comforts get them back on track

Woking vs Bromley
Vanarama National League
Tuesday 21st February 2023

The Cards challenging month prompted another stutter on Saturday as they were beaten 3-1 at Altrincham and they’ll be looking to get back to winning ways when they host Bromley on Tuesday.

Having gone three league games without a win, Woking are on their worst run of form this season, and whilst their tally of just one win in six doesn’t necessarily reflect the strength of some of the performances, most notably the games at Chesterfield and Wrexham, the Cards will no doubt be hoping that the back-to-back home matches this week can help get them back on track. Luckily for Darren Sarll’s side, both Barnet and Chesterfield also dropped points last weekend, meaning the Cards remain in pole position for third-place – although of course they’ll need to rediscover their best form to secure a play-off place, before they start thinking about home advantage for a potential semi-final.

With the games coming thick and fast, Sarll made several changes for the Altrincham game, with Scott Cuthbert, Jake Hessenthaler, Solomon Nwabuokei, and Marcus Dackers all coming into the side – indeed, it was two of those players who linked up for the Woking goal, with Hessenthaler’s cross being headed in by Dackers for his first Woking goal. Luke Wilkinson, Kyran Lofthouse, Jim Kellermann, and James Daly all dropped to the bench, albeit with three of those coming on in the second-half.

Goalkeeper Craig Ross and captain Josh Casey will both make their 200th appearance for Woking if they feature at any stage on Tuesday evening.

Opposition Watch

Bromley are currently in seventh place, occupying the final play-off spot, with 47 points from 31 games. They are stronger at home, having taken 29 of their points at Hayes Lane – losing just twice, including to Woking in November. Away from home they have taken 18 points from 14 games.

Their recent form is good – they are currently on a seven match unbeaten run, winning three and drawing four, including recent wins at home to Dorking and away to Altrincham. Their only defeat since the turn of the year was a narrow 2-1 defeat at Wrexham. In fact, that’s their only defeat in 90 minutes since losing to Woking last year, with their only other loss coming on penalties to Bath City in the FA Trophy.

Andy Woodman’s side offers plenty of attacking threat – long-time National League dangermen Michael Cheek and Adam Marriott are currently their top scorers with nine and eight goals respectively, although the latter is without a goal since October. One other name to look out for in the Bromley squad is Mitchel Bergkamp, the son of former Netherlands international Dennis.
