Woking vs York City
Vanarama National League
Saturday 10th December

Woking will be looking to stretch their unbeaten run in the National League to nine matches when they take on York City on Saturday at the Laithwaite Community Stadium.

The Cards had to come from behind last week after trailing Maidstone United 1-0 at half-time. Goals from Rohan Ince, Rhys Browne, and Jim Kellermann saw the home side fight back to take all three points and move up to third place in the league table. Manager Darren Sarll will be looking for his side to continue their good run but faces a stiff challenge in the shape of York, who comfortably defeated the Cards in the reverse fixture on the opening day of the season, winning 2-0 – one of only three games in all competitions this season in which Woking have failed to score.

Sarll will have to manage without key midfielder Kellermann, who will miss the game after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season against the Stones, but in return will have full-back Dan Moss available against after suspension. The Woking boss could choose to go with a like-for-like replacement for Kellermann in midfield, with Jack Roles and versatile loanee Charlie O’Connell amongst his options, or he could instead revert to 4-4-2 with Kyran Lofthouse pushed further forward.

Opposition Watch

York started the season strongly following their win over the Cards – winning four and drawing two of their first eight league games. However, their form deteriorated throughout October and November, and they are currently amid a nine-game winless run in the league, with four draws and five defeats. In that run they lost to Dorking, Wealdstone, Altrincham, Southend, and Aldershot, as well as exiting the FA Cup at the hands of Shrewsbury Town.

Their indifferent form contributed towards the surprise departure of manager John Askey, who led the club to promotion from National League North via the play-offs last season but had reportedly clashed with the club’s new chairman earlier this season. Askey was replaced at the start of this month by former Huddersfield Town head of football operations David Webb. However, with Webb currently unwell, assistant manager Michael Morton will lead the team this weekend.

Webb’s first game in charge was last weekend’s draw with promotion-chasing Wrexham when substitute striker Manny Duku scored in the second minute of stoppage time to claim a point. The result leaves the Minstermen in 18th place in the league tables, seven points clear of the bottom four, and eight adrift of the play-off places. Their top scorer this season is Lenell John-Lewis with eight.
