Woking vs Solihull Moors
Vanarama National League
Saturday 24th September 2022

Woking will be aiming to make it four wins out of five at the Laithwaite Community Stadium this season when they host Solihull Moors on Saturday afternoon.

The Cards have certainly enjoyed their best performances on home soil so far this term – winning nine of their 13 points at Kingfield – whilst their struggles on the road continued last time out when they fell to a disappointing 1-0 defeat at Maidenhead United. But Darren Sarll’s side will know they’ll need to be at their best if they’re to claim all three points this weekend as they take on last season’s beaten play-off finalists, who have won the last three meetings between the two clubs, including both of last season’s meetings.

Sarll has been boosted by a near clean bill of health ahead of Saturday’s game – with Reece Grego-Cox available again after missing the last two games and Sid Nelson closing in on a return after being out of action since pre-season. There is one, as yet unnamed player, who the manager says will miss out through illness.

Opposition Watch

Whilst many clubs have struggled after losing the play-off final, there has been little in the way of a hangover at Damson Park, with manager Neil Ardley overseeing a strong start to the new season. The Moors sit third after nine games, with 18 points thus far, winning five and losing just one of their opening fixtures. They’ve also scored an impressive 23 goals – a joint league high with Wrexham.

Their form so far this month is equally impressive – they’ve won 5-1 at home to Altrincham and 4-1 away at Torquay, before a 1-1 draw against Barnet last time out. Strikers Alex Reid and Andrew Dallas have both scored three times in September already and will be a big threat on Saturday.

Reid, on loan from last year’s promotion winners Stockport County, is one of nine new arrivals at the club this season. Amongst their other additions is forward Josh Kelly, who scored 15 times for Maidenhead last season, Stevenage defender Ben Coker, and Oldham midfielder Callum Whelan. They also added former Woking utility man Joey Jones, although he’s yet to play for the club this season.

The club managed to keep hold of most of their star players from last season, including attacking midfielder Joe Sbarra, with the only notable exit being giant striker Kyle Hudlin who joined Huddersfield – and subsequently AFC Wimbledon on loan. Experienced forwards Adam Rooney and Danny Newton also left the club.
