Sam Habergham

#28 Left-Back

The left-sided defender joined Woking from National League rivals Wealdstone in the summer of 2023. He arrived to add both depth and experience to the Cards' backline, starting the season as back-up to first-choice left-back and captain Josh Casey, as well as offering additional cover in central defence, and allowing manager Darren Sarll to switch between a back four and a back three.

A two-time England C international, he started his career with Norwich City, graduating from the club's academy in 2009 having been with the Canaries since the age of seven. However, his senior debut came two years later following a move to National League side Tamworth. After a year with the Lambs he joined another fifth tier side, Braintree Town, where he became an integral player under two well-respected managers - Alan Devonshire and Danny Cowley.

He spent four years at Cressing Road, making an impressive 190 appearances in all competitions, including all but one of the club's 48 league matches (including play-offs) in 2015/16 when they finished third and reached a play-off semi-final. His consistently strong performances saw him join Cowley in moving to Lincoln City the following season. The Imps romped to the National League title with 99 points and reached an unprecedented FA Cup quarter-final, defeating Championship clubs Ipswich and Brighton as well as Premier League Burnley en route to defeat against eventual winners Arsenal. Once again the defender was amongst the first names on the team sheet, playing 56 times in all competitions and scoring four goals, the first of his career. The following season he made a further 40 appearances for Lincoln as they reached the League Two play-offs, losing to Exeter City, and won the EFL Trophy - playing the full 90 minutes in the 1-0 final win over Shrewsbury Town at Wembley.

Sadly, a serious knee injury put him out of action for an extended period. He eventually joined Grimsby Town on a short-term deal in January 2021, close to three years after his last competitive match for Lincoln. He made 13 appearances for the struggling League Two side who would end the season with relegation to the National League. After a brief spell in Australia he appeared for Woking in a pre-season friendly in the summer of 2022, but eventually opted to join league rivals Wealdstone. He made 39 appearances for the Stones in all competitions last season as they finished comfortably in mid-table and now he returns to Woking looking to make his mark for the Cards.
