Woking vs York City
Vanarama National League
Saturday 5th October 2024
17:30 Kick-Off

Woking host high-flying York City at the Laithwaite in a late kick-off due to the game being televised on DAZN.

Following the National League Cup in midweek, positives included a late fightback courtesy of Dion Kelly-Evans and Jamie Andrews both scoring their first goals for the club, whilst Harry Beautyman returned from injury off the bench.

Expect rotation from the team that started against Brighton U21s, with the likes of Will Jaaskelainen, Dan Moss and Cian Harries back after being rested.

Opposition Watch
It seems like a lifetime ago that York and Woking were battling for survival in the last couple of weeks of the season, such has been the transformation at the LNER Stadium. A huge clearout from Adam Hinshelwood has seen 17 players depart the Minstermen, with 11 incomings including Worthing duo Joe Felix and Ollie Pearce, Rochdale duo Tyrese Sinclair and Cameron John, whilst York beat several other clubs to the signing of talented Dorking keeper Harrison Male.

The impact that this has had, alongside keeping players such as Dipo Akinyemi and Dan Batty at the club, has been astronomical. It took City 24 games and until late December to surpass the 25-point mark, they’ve done it in half the time this season, sitting second in the table only behind Barnet.

You’d be forgiven for thinking they haven’t even hit second gear yet, when you look at the stats. Akinyemi is yet to get off the mark in nine appearances after netting 15 times last season, with Pearce having netted three times. It is the ever reliable Lenell John-Lewis who sits top of the York scoring charts with four in twelve, despite ‘The Shop’ only playing 270 minutes in his effective super sub role. No team has conceded less than York’s six goals either, making them hard to beat even when they have an off day in front of goal.

Last Time Out
York secured a huge step towards National League safety by beating the Cards 2-0 thanks to goals from Billy Chadwick and Dipo Akinyemi, as both sides would eventually stay up at the expense of Boreham Wood.

All four meetings since York were promoted back in 2022 have gone the way of the Minstermen, with a 2-1 win at the Laithwaite last September being backed up by two 2-0 victories in 2022/23 despite both sides finishing at opposite ends of the table.
