There is something so exciting and unique about the start of any football season when the air is brimming with expectation. The kits are pristine, the pitch is perfect, the stadium has had a spruce up, returning players become more familiar year-by-year and new additions are welcomed to the Woking family. Perhaps, most of all, after a few months of solitary gardening or house chores we, as supporters, get a chance to gather again as friends around our shared passion – Woking Football Club.
Football is a game of extreme passions and emotions. Fans soon learn that the highs are to be embraced and celebrated but also that they are such highs purely because there are also lows. Most football fans, over the years, develop a great ability to shrug off the lows (usually after a bit of a mope and a rant) and be crazily optimistic and expectant by the next game.
Each season brings a new start, and the regrets of the past campaign are consigned to history. We know there will be moments of triumph to come with stunning goals and victories against the odds, but we also know there will be poor referee decisions, mistakes and disappointing defeats. We know there will be moments that leave us buzzing for days but also afternoons that are like a punch in the guts. I hesitate to compare supporting a club to marriage but when we sign up there is an element of committing ‘for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health until de…’ - no, let’s not go there!
We are living in very challenging times on many fronts and, as so often, football does mirror life in many ways. For many of us a living faith is an important part of that life journey - not as an escape because the struggles, the disappointments and failures are real. Alongside this however regrets are infused with a deep sense of hope rooted in God’s promise of renewal and new beginnings.
So, here we are at another new beginning ahead of our first home game of the season, and there is a tantalising whiff of glory in the air – could this be THE year for promotion or cup glory – who knows? What we do know is that we will make the journey together – it’s what we signed up for!
Wishing all Woking fans well for the coming campaign. As Chaplain, I am committed to supporting anyone (of all faiths or none) involved with the club in any way I can. I can be contacted on ian.nicholson@wokingfc.co.uk or just grab me on a match day.
