Woking vs Yeovil Town
Vanarama National League
Saturday 29th January 2022

Woking will be aiming to finally get one over on Yeovil Town as they host the Glovers at the Laithwaite Community Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Cards have lost twice already to Yeovil this season, 2-0 in the National League in October and 3-1 in the FA Trophy last month, with Woking having led 1-0 for a large portion of the second game before three goals in the final nine minutes swung the game in favour of the home side. Manager Alan Dowson will be buoyed by a more favourable home record against Saturday’s opponents, with a win and a draw over the Glovers since both club’s return to the fifth tier in 2019, compared to a run of four straight defeats away from home.

Dowse will also be looking to get his side quickly back to winning ways, after a narrow 1-0 loss to play-off chasing Bromley on Tuesday evening, which came courtesy of Jude Arthurs freak first-half goal following a fortunate ricochet. The Cards will be looking to make it three wins from four at home, following positive results against Dover Athletic and Wealdstone over the last month, but they’ll have to do so without top scorer Tahvon Campbell, who left the club this week, signing for League Two side Rochdale for an undisclosed fee. Fellow striker George Oakley, midfielder Jermaine Anderson, and defenders Tom Champion and Josh Casey are still awaiting their returns from injury and illness respectively. Louie Annesley will be suspended for this game following his sending off in mid-week.

Opposition Watch

Yeovil are 13th in the league table, level on points with Woking, but one place behind in the standings due to an inferior goal difference – although they do have two games in hand. After an excellent run-up to Christmas, their recent record is poor, with four straight defeats in the league – going down to Wrexham, Southend United (both 2-1), and Torquay United twice (2-1 and 3-0). They also needed penalties to get past Needham Market in the FA Trophy and saw their excellent FA Cup run come to an end at home to Championship promotion-chasers AFC Bournemouth in round three.

Manager Darren Sarll has been in charge since 2019 and is coming to the end of a three-year contract signed that summer. He guided his side to the play-offs in his first season before finishing 16th last campaign. He won the league’s November Manager of the Month Award after winning four games out of five, with impressive victories over Eastleigh, Dagenham & Redbridge, Bromley, and Wrexham.

Sarll’s squad has recently lost top scorer and former Woking loanee Joe Quigley, who has joined league leaders Chesterfield, although Cards fans will be familiar with defender/midfielder Josh Staunton. Elsewhere, Dowse will be mindful of the threat of forward Adi Yussuf, who has enjoyed plenty of success at this level for the likes of Solihull Moors and Wrexham and netted a brace in the Trophy game, as well as midfielder Tom Knowles, who has scored in both previous meetings this season.
