Ladies 2-0 Southampton Reserves
Woking College

On a scorcher of an afternoon, we welcomed Southampton Ladies Reserves to the College for our first run at Step Six football. We got an early taste for the new standard as some lovely football was played by both teams in the first ten minutes but no clear-cut chances created as both defences stood firm.

In the 13th minute, a clever through ball from Gemma Luke on debut saw Tia Williams race through on goal and powerfully strike past the keeper for the opening goal of the season. The heat continued to pound down on to the artificial surface as the game started to open up with opportunities at each end.

In the 33rd minute, the never-tiring Kaitlin Howard made a long run down the right-hand side and delivered an inviting cross towards the back post where Tia was once again waiting to tap the ball in from a couple of yards, giving Woking a solid 2-0 lead going into the half-time break.

The second-half played very similarly to the first, solid football from both sides in the opening ten minutes before the heat really started to hammer away and the game became more and more stretched. Opportunities went begging at each end, as Southampton’s number eleven rounded Teri Harfield-Brown but slotted her shot wide of the empty net. Jo Harfield-Brown was clean through one-on-one as well but struck the ball onto the post.

Some resolute defending from our back four, including Player of the Match Megan Vincer, kept Southampton to long-distance shots for the remainder of the game and the full-time whistle blew, meaning the first venture into Step Six was a successful one for the ladies.

The first game was a tough one for the reserves, with no less than seven debuts in the team. Ruislip started the better and a fifteen minute spell in the first-half saw them score three goals, before adding a fourth later on. Some of the team had only trained once before their first game and as they got to know each other they grew into the game throughout the second-half. A shift of positions for some also benefited the team and the 0-0 score line in the second-half showed the improvement made.
