Woking vs Billericay Town
National League South
Saturday 1st September

It’s arguably one of the most anticipated games at the Laithwaite Community Stadium in many a year – Woking host Billericay Town in an early season ‘six-pointer’ as the top two teams in the National League South look to make an early statement in the race for promotion.

The Cards have made their best start to a league season in close to 30 years with six wins out of seven – and just one defeat away to Wealdstone. Alan Dowson’s side impressed by picking up six points out of six over the Bank Holiday weekend, coming from behind to beat Truro City 3-1 before ending Eastbourne Borough’s unbeaten start to the season, Kane Ferdinand’s late goal securing a 2-1 victory.

Billericay are just two points behind the Cards with five wins, one draw and one defeat so far. Despite their impressive record they have had a tumultuous week – suffering a shock 2-0 defeat to Chippenham Town on Saturday, with manager Harry Wheeler reportedly sacked before the game had even finished, before falling two goals behind against St Albans City on Monday. However, when you have as much quality in your ranks as the Blues do, it’s hard to keep a team down and they did eventually comeback to win 3-2. There is no confirmation yet on Wheeler’s future and it’s been suggested in the press that the popular coach could yet return.

Whoever is at the helm for our visitors it’s going to be a fascinating game which really could go either way so come down to Kingfield if you can and lend your support!

The Cards will hope to be close to full strength for the visit of their closest rivals. Charlie Wassmer, Ian Gayle, Christian Jolley and Jake Hyde were amongst the absentees against Eastbourne but none are thought to be far away from returning. It will be particularly pleasing to see Wassmer make his long-awaited debut but Dowse might decide that this is too important a game to put any of his previously missing players straight back into the line-up.

Against Eastbourne the Cards made two changes – Kiran Khinda-John replacing Gayle and Paul Hodges coming in for Duane Ofori-Acheampong. This meant Greg Luer was somewhat surprisingly handed the task of leading the line, having previously played out on the right flank, and the former Hull City man came close to finding the net on a couple of occasions. Max Kretzschmar, with one goal and four assists over the Bank Holiday weekend, will no doubt be the key man once again.

Billericay Town Team News

Ricay have an extremely talented squad full of players who have impressed at a higher level. Against St Albans they lined up with Alan Julian, best known for his time with Stevenage, in goal; a defence of Ricky Hayles, former AFC Wimbledon full-back Callum Kennedy, the experienced ex-Dagenham defender Scott Doe and Ben Gerring; a midfield of former England C international Sam Deering, captain Dan Waldren and Joe Kizzi; with a front three of former Tottenham, Portsmouth and Fulham man Jamie O’Hara and ex-Luton and Dagenham player Jake Howells supporting star frontman Jake Robinson – who has nine goals already this season.

Also in their squad are two former Cards – winger Moses Emmanuel, formerly Ademola, and striker Adam Cunnington. Other familiar names are former Dover wide-man Ricky Modeste, ex-Oxford United midfielder Alfie Potter – who famously scored for Havant and Waterlooville against Liverpool in the FA Cup – and striker Adam Coombes who scored 30 goals in 31 games for Welling United during the 2016/17 season.
