Woking v Met Police
Surrey Senior Cup Final
7.45pm on Wednesday 30 April 2014

Can the Cards round off another successful season with some silverware? Come down to Kingfield on Wednesday evening to cheer the team on. It’s a great opportunity too to thank Garry, Steve and the squad for all their hard work and good football this season.

SURREY SENIOR CUP

The Saturday Senior Cup, as it is formally known, has a venerable history, with the first competition being played in 1882-83 when Reigate Priory beat East Sheen 2-0. In its early days other winners included Guy’s Hospital, Royal Scots, Townley Park, Nunhead, Metrogas and Summerstown.

Woking first contested the final in 1897-98 when they lost 4-0 to Weybridge. They lifted the trophy in 1912-13, beating Metrogas 2-0, and have since gone on to record 10 more victories, some way behind Sutton United, who have won the competition 15 times, including six wins in succession in the 1980s.

WOKING

The Cards are in a very upbeat mood following their 4-2 win at Tamworth on the closing day of the league season, which lifted them to 9th place in the table: a terrific achievement, especially when you take into account the side’s slow start to the season.

Woking will be missing Mark Ricketts, whose three-match suspension includes this game (although it doesn’t count towards the three matches!), and Joey Jones, who is recovering from an appendix operation.

The Cards’ progress to the final has been:

Woking 5 Lingfield 2
Woking 3 Walton Casuals 2
Chipstead 2 Woking 6
Woking 7 Egham Town 1

Woking last won the competition in 2011-12 when they beat Sutton United 3-1. Last year Woking went out at the Quarter-Final stage to the eventual winners, Godalming Town.

MET POLICE

The Met Police finished in 17th position in the Ryman Premier Division, with 58 points from 46 games. On Saturday they lost 1-0 at fifth-placed AFC Hornchurch. They were promoted to the Ryman Premier Division at the end of the 2010-11 season, having lost in four previous play-off finals.

The Met Police’s progress to this final has been:

Met Police 3 Guildford City 0
Dorking Wanderers 0 Met Police 2
Met Police 3 Ash United 0
Met Police 2 Merstham 0

Met Police have won the competition once, beating Dulwich Hamlet 2-1 in 1932-33. Their only other appearance in the final was in 2006-07 when they lost 4-1 to Tooting and Mitcham.

The side is managed by Jim Cooper, who has been with the club for over 10 years. The squad includes former Cards Dan Sintim and Will Salmon.
