The Academy Awards
Another season of successes with all teams competing well within their leagues albeit the primary emphasis is on player development rather than winning.
The Academy, comprising 16-19 year old boys, is very highly thought of and this year we had a record number of over 1000 applications for the trials; consequently the intake for next year is looking particularly strong.
The Centre of Excellence programme is now in its 6th year and continues to go from strength to strength with approximately 100 local boys involved.
The Academy would not be able to function without the support of volunteers so we would like to give particular thanks to Jennifer Tombs for her unwavering help and support.
The U17s Manager's Player of the Season was Bradley Breach. Signed from Crawley Town and new into the Academy this year, a combative midfielder with a bright future who does not take any prisoners.
The U18s Manager's Player of the Season was Richard Gatcum. Richard shows great leadership qualities and although not the biggest he commands central defence. We would like to thank Richard for his commitment to the club and wish him well for the future as he is taking up the offer of a contract in Australia.
The U19s Manager's Player of the Season was Niall Wright. Niall is in his third and final year with the academy, he has progressed each year and has been a bright spark this season in centre midfield. He has spear-headed the Football Conference Youth League side to hopefully winning their division as well as being ever-present in the reserves. If he continues to develop we are sure he will go far in his footballing career.
Other awards and important announcements
The Clubman of the Year award went to programme editor David Horncastle.
Club Chairman, Mike Smith, announced that the club has secured a major sponsorship with Calor Gas, and a major sponsorship agreement with Woking Shopping, placing the club in the very heart of this fantastic town.
A further announcement was made, with The Royal Navy accepting a formal association between their Type 45 Destroyer "HMS Duncan" and Woking Football Club. Listen to the Chairman's speech to hear more about this unique announcement.
