Garry Hill used this fixture with Carshalton to provide opportunities for triallists to make their mark and as a result rested a number of the First Team squad – Mark Ricketts, Adam Newton, Brett Johnson, Lee Sawyer and Kevin Betsy were all rested.

Of the recent triallists, Renee Steer, Dean Sinclair, Jesse Waller-Lassen, plus Louie Meech from the Academy, were all given an opportunity to impress. Ex-Card loan signing Nathanial Pinney featured alongside another new triallist George Saunders.

Woking started kicking down the slope on an overcast afternoon with a cool breeze. With Pinney up top, Waller-Lassen and Bubb on the wings, Sole just behind the striker, Sinclair and Davies in midfield and a back four of Parkinson, McNerney, Doyle and Steer, the Cards started well.

Gez Sole (pictured) was immediately on the score sheet as after three minutes he took advantage of a poor clearance to curl a low shot into the corner of the net with the home keeper well beaten. Some of Woking’s passing was a little patchy but Bubb did well to get down the right, though his cross into the box did not find a Woking player.

The home side struggled at the start but once they got control of midfield they looked much more dangerous. As the Robins started putting some moves together they levelled the scores after fifteen minutes, when Taylor got free inside the penalty area.

They became much more confident after that and more than held their own.

After half an hour Woking worked the ball out from the back. The final pass found Bubb twenty yards out and central. He lined up the shot but fired wide.

The last action of the half saw Woking string several passes together but the final ball into the box was easily claimed by Hamann in the home goal

Half-time: Carshalton Athletic 1 Woking 1

Pires replaced Bubb at the start of the second half but the first chance fell to the home side. Nolan had about four chances to score before scuffing his shot against a post.

A Sole free-kick twenty yards out was blocked by the wall while at the other end Wayne Gray hit a firm shot wide. Aaron Howe parried a shot from the dangerous Carew, before Pires got clear but hit his shot too high.

In the last thirty minutes Woking had a number of chances to secure the win but were unable to convert.
