Pre-Season Friendly

Woking will play the fourth of their pre-season friendly matches on Tuesday evening as they travel to take on League 2 side Sutton United at Gander Green Lane.

The Cards were held to a 1-1 draw at National League South side Farnborough on Saturday. James Daly scored Woking’s goal from the penalty spot, before Borough levelled in the second-half, with the game played out on a strikingly hot day in Hampshire. Manager Darren Sarll handed debuts to midfielder Jim Kellermann and defender Sid Nelson, who came on as a substitute.

Sarll’s line-up experimentation continued as he started with a back four of Kyran Lofthouse, Josh Casey, Joe McNerney, and Scott Cuthbert, ahead of Ethan Wady in goal. Further forward was a central midfield pairing of Kellermann and Rohan Ince, with Tyreke Johnson and Ricky Korboa out wide, and Padraig Amond up front alongside Daly.

Sutton United are preparing for their second season in the Football League after another exceptional year under the stewardship of manager Matt Gray. After upsetting the odds to win the National League in 2021, they continued to spring surprises throughout their first full season in the EFL, challenging for promotion throughout the campaign. They eventually finished eighth, one point adrift of the play-off places, and only four points behind Bristol Rovers in the last automatic spot.

They also reached the final of the EFL Trophy, where they played League One runners-up Rotherham United at Wembley and were seconds away from victory – before eventually succumbing to a 4-2 defeat after extra time.

The core of the U’s squad remains the same as their promotion-winning campaign – the likes of Harry Beautyman, Craig Eastmond, Ben Goodliffe, and Omar Bugiel remain regulars, whilst they’ve added further quality with Enzio Boldewijn (former Notts County) and Joe Kizzi (ex-Bromley). However, this summer has seen the departure of several key players, including goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis to Championship Reading and winger David Ajiboye to Peterborough. Long-serving midfielder Kenny Davis also left to join Farnborough, whilst striker Richie Bennett moved to Barrow.

Coming in, thus far they’ve added goalkeeper Jack Rose from Walsall, left-back Sam Hart from relegated Oldham Athletic, and striker Kwame Thomas from Wrexham. Former Woking loanee Josh Neufville has also joined on loan from Luton Town. On Saturday they handed contracts to three trialists – striker Tope Fadahunsi, winger Luke Gambin, and centre-back Matt Ridley.

So far in pre-season they’ve beaten three teams from the National League and National League South – Dorking Wanderers (2-1), Havant & Waterlooville (2-1), and Dulwich Hamlet (2-0), before a goalless draw with League One side Charlton Athletic on Saturday.
