Surrey Senior Cup 2nd Round
7.45pm on Tuesday 3 November 2015

The Cards start their Surrey Senior Cup trail tomorrow evening when they take on Sutton Common Rovers.

WOKING

One hopes that league form won’t count for anything in this tie, given that the Cards’ defeat on Saturday at Kidderminster Harriers was their seventh in the last nine games. Presumably, Garry Hill will give a run-out to players who have been on the fringe of the first team in recent games but he may also want to use this opportunity to help to improve cohesion and understanding in the squad.

SUTTON COMMON ROVERS

Sutton Common Rovers were first formed in 1978 and have gone through a number of name changes in that time, most recently dropping the name Mole Valley SCR. This season saw them return to Sutton to ground-share with Sutton United. They play in the Combined Counties League Premier Division and are currently in 17th place. On Saturday they had a notable 1-0 win at Worthing United in the FA Vase.

A familiar name in their squad to many Woking fans will be that of Anson Cousins, an Academy graduate who played a number of times for the first team before joining Hampton and Richmond Borough and Chertsey. He’s just notched up his 50th appearance for the club. Other players who’ve worn the red and white halves at one level or another include Harry Smart and Richard Smith.

CARDS TRUST AGM

The Cards Trust AGM is taking place the same evening, beginning at 7.30pm in the Cardinals Bar. The Club has agreed that those attending the AGM can be admitted free of charge: the business is likely to be over in time to watch the whole of the second half. It is very important that there is a quorum for the AGM, in view of the elections that are taking place, so please come along to the meeting.

NEXT UP

The Cards don’t have a fixture next weekend. They are at home to Braintree Town on Tuesday 10 November and then at home again on Saturday 14 November, when Macclesfield Town are the visitors. Come and help lift the side at these two very important home games as they battle to overcome a lean spell.

Come on, you Cards!

P.S. Don’t forget the Sinatra and Michael Bublé tribute night this Friday.

Surrey Senior Cup 2nd Round
3rd November 2015

Woking went into this cup tie having won only once in the last nine matches. Their opponents were currently ninety-five places below them in the non-league pyramid and struggling in the lower reaches of The Combined Counties Premier Division.

The visitors did their best to try to stem the tide and also made the odd trip into the Woking half, but they were totally out-played over the ninety minutes. Credit to them, however, they kept going right to the end and never resorted to an over-physical approach even when they were well and truly out of the game.

The first goal of the night came when Jake Caprice set up Jimmy Keohane and he volleyed home.

The same pairing set up number two on eighteen minutes.

Caprice then ran into the box on twenty-four minutes, the ball slipped from the grasp of the visitors' 'keeper Leigh Bowden, allowing Holman to tap home.

There were a number of near misses before a loose ball in the box was thumped home by Keohane on thirty-eight minutes for the fourth.

Just before the break the home side added a fifth, the overworked Bowden stopping a Dan Holman shot before Keohane netted via a deflection.

If the visitors were hoping for a better second period, things did not get off to an auspicious start for them. Straight from the kick-off , a number of Woking passes found Holman free inside the area for an easy finish to make it six.

The visitors then managed a shot that was easily spotted through the slowly descending mist by a now very chilly Jake Cole in the home goal.

Goal number seven quickly followed. Substitute Bruno Andrade hit a long ball into the box, which was retrieved by Cameron Norman on the right and his cross set up Adam Cunnington for a tap-in on the line.

In the seventieth minute Andrade got on the scoresheet to make it eight.

When the Rovers did get the ball, they were always surrounded by a host of Woking players and unable to find a way through, emphasising the gulf in class between the leagues.

With time running out, substitute Giuseppe Sole decided to get in on the act when he found himself totally in the clear to bag the ninth.

For a little bit of self-respect, it would have been good for the visitors to keep the damage in single figures, but alas it was not to be. Bowden slipped when making a clearance, the ball went straight to Kadell Daniel about twenty-five yards out and he banged it home for one of the best goals of the evening.

It will no doubt have been good for the team's confidence to find the back of the net so frequently during the course of the ninety minutes and also to have a good run-out this week in the absence of a match this coming Saturday. The management and players will be under no illusions as to the step-up in performance which will be required, however, when they return to league action at the Laithwaite Community Stadium next Tuesday night against high-flying Braintree Town, who will be looking to do the double over the Cards following a 2-1 victory in Essex earlier in the season.
