Woking U18 6 – 1 Dartford; National League Alliance – League Cup, First Round
Woking College, Rydens Way
Report from Ian Tilley
A number of changes were made to Woking’s usual second year’s squad for Alliance League games, with chances given in this cup game to first years who have been doing well so far this season.
Woking took the early initiative and within ten minutes both Sam and Bushby had seen shots saved, although Mattingley, Manly and Leedham were required to make some good defensive blocks.
Woking had the lead on 24 minutes, the referee judged that Jennison-Leppa had been fouled as a corner kick came into the penalty area, and Ledbury comfortably sent the ‘keeper the wrong way.
The Cards doubled their lead, somewhat fortuitously, on 38 minutes. Loader made a great forward run before rather miscuing a cross which went over Dartford’s custodian and in off the far post.
Loader could have had another before the break, twice seeing shots saved, whilst a very good Jennison-Leppa headed clearance maintained the hosts two-goal advantage.
Half-time: Woking 2 – 0 Dartford
Woking continued in the ascendency, with both Rhioui and Loader missing chances they would usually hope to convert, before Rhioui scored the third on 53 minutes. A determined run and low, hard cross by Sam, persevering despite a painful kick on the ankle, met with an equally determined close range finish from the tightly marked Rhioui.
Four substitutions at once, just after the hour mark, did see Dartford rally. Moore doing well to narrow the angle and make a good save, and Boyle making an excellent covering challenge, but Woking would soon be back on top.
Loader will, of course, rue putting a penalty wide on 77 minutes, but made amends three minutes later, heading home at the far post from a quality Ledbury corner delivery.
Woking pressed home the advantage, the substitutes combining well for the fifth goal on 83 minutes, Richards releasing Kigozi to put in a great cross, with Callow’s anticipation putting him in the right place to finish neatly.
Woking completed their scoring five minutes later, Kigozi’s corner was only cleared to the edge of the box, and Gales smartly dispatched the ball back into the corner of the net.
Dartford did find some late consolation through a Sammy Regan goal, but this should not detract from a much more satisfactory result for Woking than the 0 – 3 reverse in the home league game four weeks previously.
Woking: James Moore, Louie Boyle (Will Richards 73), Luke Manly, Sonny Leedham, Joel Jennison-Leppa, George Mattingley, Frankie Bushby © (Alfie Gales 70), Zack Rhioui, Will Ledbury (Joe Callow 81), Kameron Sam (Roshan Kigozi 60), George Loader. Unused substitute: Ryan Warren (GK).
Goals: Ledbury 24 pen, Loader 38, 80, Rhioui 53, Callow 83, Gales 88.
Woking U19 (EDS) 3 – 0 Welling United U19; National Academy League – South Division
Westfield FC, Woking Park
Report from Holly Porter
Fresh after a week off, the Elite Development Squad hosted Welling United on Wednesday afternoon, the latest challengers to their 100% home record.
Looking to build on their confident 7-goal showing last time out, a number of chances fell to the Cards in the opening stages, but none were converted, which became a theme as the half progressed.
Patterson, off the back of his first-team appearance the night before, was the closest to an opener in the first 10 minutes. A driving 7th-minute run saw him power through midfield as he skipped around the Welling pressure, which created some space in the box, but his shot hit the outside netting.
The 11th minute saw some great link-up play between Trickett and Boxall as the captain almost broke the deadlock. It was Boxall who won the ball back from a Welling throw and managed to thread the ball to Trickett before his upfield sprint. His run behind the defence was found by Trickett, but the final shot from the skipper was well held on to by the Welling no. 1.
Trickett went for goal himself in the 14th minute, having opened up some space for himself in the corner of the penalty area. His shot forced a solid save from the ‘keeper, who dove to his left to get a strong glove to the effort mid-air, denying the no. 9.
Welling had a golden opportunity to open the scoring on 22 minutes, with Verga off his line in an attempt to make a clearance. Welling won the race, getting a touch ahead of the arriving Verga, but the subsequent shot from range was fired over the bar.
A good move forward just before the 30-minute mark saw Trickett feed the ball into the goalmouth, where Cotton, another involved with the first team the previous night, was arriving. Again, the Welling no. 1 was there to eliminate the threat, diving on the ball before the right-back could tap home.
Welling ended the half with two decent chances to take the lead, firstly when they broke forward following a Woking corner, but dragged the shot narrowly wide in the 38th minute. With the final touch of the half, an effort from range aimed to dip just under the crossbar for the visitors, but instead went narrowly over the woodwork to confirm a goalless first half.
Half-time: Woking 0 – 0 Welling United
The second half got off to a quick start, with Lewis being brought down in attacking action, which earned a penalty for the Cards. Trickett remained composed under pressure and calmly converted from the spot in the 50th minute, sending the keeper the wrong way in the process.
Woking’s second of the afternoon saw Boxall open his account for the season. The initial effort from the skipper came from range and took a deflection before it rolled out for a corner ball. It was Hayati who took the set-piece, with Boxall arriving at the back post to tap home. An attempt at a goal-line clearance looked initially to have saved Welling, but the 72nd-minute effort had already crossed the line and so stood.
Woking’s third and final goal of the afternoon was gifted to Trickett in a defensive error that saw him pick the ball up on the edge of the box, allowing him to comfortably slot home in the 81st minute.
The full-time whistle shortly after not only confirmed the win for the Cards, but it also cemented back-to-back clean sheets and a third consecutive home game in which Verga’s net could be breached.
Academy Manager Matt Winter reflected on that after the game, stating: “We’re really pleased with the clean sheet, I think that’s massive. Two in two for us. It was an area of our game that we needed to really sharpen up on. We’ve conceded quite a few goals, so to go two in the last two is excellent.”
On goalscorer Boxall: “He’s our captain, he’s our leader. We know from last season what he can give us from midfield. It’s been an interesting start for him; he’s played in slightly different positions than he’s used to, which means he’s probably not getting into those areas that he did before. We spoke at half-time about the corners, going deep and arriving late, and it’s pleasing for him to get his goal, and for that to work for us.”
Woking: Mikey Verga, Bailey Cotton, Jack Lewis, Quincy Patterson (Cameron McQueen 60’), Chris Rangel, Kemall Wilson, Jayden Smith (Josh Solecki 67’), Lucas Boxall © (Yousef Mezenner 84’), Joden Trickett, Kooshan Hayati (Freddie Greenstreet 73’), Malachy Mpoy (Jayden Hudson-Odoi 46’).
Goalscorers: Joden Trickett 50’ pen, 81’, Lucas Boxall 72’.
Thursday 23rd October
Woking U18 A – A Abbey Rangers: Suburban Football League – Premier Division
Knaphill FC, Redding Way
This match was abandoned with 57 minutes played (with the scores at 1 – 1), after Abbey’s Victor Ezekiel was injured in an accidental collision and it was uncertain how long it would take for an ambulance to arrive. Victor was later released from hospital at 3 a.m. with concussion. We wish him a speedy and complete recovery.
Other news
Quincy Patterson, Midfield, EDS made his first appearance for the First Team coming on as a substitute for the final ten minutes of the 2 – 0 victory over Fulham U21 in the National League Cup. Quincy did well as Woking saw out their win with ten men, covering his opponents well as a left (wing) back, and looking to get forward to strengthen midfield when possible.
Quincy was joined on the substitutes bench for this fixture by Bailey Cotton, Defender, EDS. With the pair also being selected for the substitutes bench for the First Team’s National League fixture against Rochdale.
