Following their first win of the season on Tuesday night against Rochdale, Woking faced one of their toughest away trips of the season when they made the short journey to the Hive to face Barnet. The Cards’ task was made more challenging by the loss of Reece Grego-Cox and Jim Kellermann to injury suffered after Tuesday night, and both were replaced by Charlie Wakefield and Dennon Lewis, the pair of which were making their first starts of the season.

Barnet kicked off towards the car park at the Hive, with Woking shooting towards the boisterous Cards fans behind the goal. The opening ten minutes were fairly even, with no chances for either side, as Barnet looked to play through the midfield, whilst the Cards were looking promising with balls in the channels.

However, with 15 minutes gone, good link up play from Idris Kanu and Zak Brunt saw the latter side foot the ball into the bottom corner to give Barnet the lead. With Barnet tails up, a superb move saw last ditch action needed to prevent Nicke Kabamba before a great save by Joe Day from a deflected shot stopped the Bees again.

Rhys Browne showed what he can do with half an hour gone, great control giving him the chance to turn and shoot. His effort looped off the top of the crossbar, with Dean Brennan visibly furious about the space that the striker managed to create.

Brunt came inches away from scoring a second when his first-time curler agonisingly hit the outside of the post and bounced away, as Barnet looked to up the ante just before half time.

The half time whistle went shortly after, a half in which the Cards looked bright in spells but risked being played completely through by a superb Barnet midfield.

Half-time: Barnet 1-0 Woking

Sarll responded to the first half by bringing on Robbie Willmott and Nana Boateng for Lewis and Wakefield, but five minutes after the restart, Brunt got his second. An outstanding curler into the top right corner gave Joe Day absolutely no chance.

Day then had to prevent Reece Hall-Johnson’s cross from reaching a Barnet man at the back post, before Cuthbert followed up with a strong block.

After much of the half was dominated by the Bees, Woking finally had another chance on 77 minutes, when a Robbie Willmott corner was met well by Cuthbert, but thundered against the bar.

With the game fading away without a trace despite six added minutes, not much could be said other than that Woking were second best for most of the game, and several players given chances by the Cards’ injury crisis failed to take them.

Woking will hope to get bodies back ahead of a long and challenging trip to Gateshead next week.
