Woking 3 Walton Casuals 2
Surrey Senior Cup 2nd Round
20th November 2013
Despite heavy rain during the day, the Kingfield pitch was in good condition for its fourth game in five days. The Woking side contained a number of squad players and in the visitors' ranks was former Card Gary MacDonald.
It was a lively opening to the match with the visiting 'keeper Mo Maan blocking two shots from Gez Sole (pictured) and the Casuals hitting the bar, albeit from an offside position.
Reece Beckles opened the scoring for Woking on six minutes. This should have been the signal for the home side to take control. That this did not happen was due in large part to the visitors getting a foothold in the game and they always looked dangerous going forward.
As the half progressed, George Frith hit a rising shot from twenty yards which just cleared the bar. Next, Sole was set up by Beckles only for Maan to smother his shot. Mike Cestor then hit a poor back pass which Aaron Howe had to race out of his area to reach. His clearance only found Hudson who put his shot wide of an empty net.
The visitors were not to be denied, however, and they drew level on forty minutes. A free-kick from thirty-five yards out found Hudson unmarked and his looped header cleared Howe to bring the scores level.
Parity did not last long as Gavin Williams restored the Cards' lead just before the break with a twenty-five yard shot which flew into the right side of the visitors' net.
Half-time: Woking 2 Walton Casuals 1
Woking started the second half on the front foot as a Frith pass was grabbed by Maan in the visitors' goal with both Sole and Beckles bearing down on him. Howe then got Woking out of trouble with neat footwork when he was left exposed by a poor back pass.
With the home side coasting, the Casuals stepped up the pressure with a five-man forward line. Howe made a good catch from one of several corners.
With twenty minutes left, the visitors were level again. A defensive lapse allowed French to get in a shot which looped over Howe.
However, the Cards once again took the lead with a quarter of an hour remaining. A fine run from Sole took him past several defenders into the left side of the penalty area and from there he stroked the ball beyond the keeper into the far side of goal for what would prove to be the winner.
Walton did their best to get back into the game for a third time but to no avail and the home side held firm to book a place in the third round draw.
